Fast & Furious Franchise Expands with Hobbs & Reyes Spinoff

In the latest Fast and Furious movie, Fast X, a popular character named Luke Hobbs appeared in a post-credits scene. Actor Dwayne Johnson announced on Twitter that a spinoff film centered around Hobbs is planned before Fast 11 is released. This spinoff will not be a sequel to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw but will take place before Fast 11 to connect the two movies.

According to a listing from Production Weekly, the spinoff will be called Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes. It will focus on the rivalry between Luke Hobbs and Jason Momoa’s character, Dante Reyes, which was teased in the post-credits scene of Fast X. Details about the spinoff, such as the release date and director, are not yet known, but the title suggests that Reyes will return to the franchise before Fast 11.

Despite Fast X not performing well at the box office, Universal is moving forward with more movies in the main Fast Saga and two announced spinoffs. The Fast Saga was originally planned to end with Fast X and Fast 11, but it seems to have been reworked into a trilogy, with Hobbs & Reyes being part of it.

The Fast & Furious franchise is adding another spinoff instead of incorporating Johnson and Momoa into the second part of the trilogy. There is also talk of a female-centered spinoff, although it has not been officially announced. If Fast X had been more successful in theaters, expanding the franchise would have made more sense.

However, the Fast & Furious series has been experiencing diminishing returns with each movie since Hobbs & Shaw. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting theater attendance, Fast X performed worse at the box office compared to F9. Universal released it on video-on-demand only three weeks after its theatrical premiere, indicating a lack of confidence in its performance. With the star power of Momoa and Johnson, Hobbs & Reyes is expected to do better than Fast X.
